Chapter Thirteen

The visit from Wally Woodstaff had been the icing on the cake, nearly causing me to storm back out of the Varnes’ house in a fit of rage. All I could imagine myself doing was hunting down Beth Ann and dragging her all throughout Key Witch by her hair until she admitted that she was behind all the ridiculous shit that seemed to be going on lately. Fortunately for her, though, I decided to stay put. I couldn’t handle any more of this unwanted attention on myself.

Shortly after Aidan and Ian had made sure that the weaselly little man was gone, Paul, Dale, and his entire family had attempted to cheer me up. Unfortunately, nothing could lift my spirits. The damage was already done, and we were no closer to figuring out a way to get the Scarlettes to stop their harassment.

I was already on the edge of my seat thanks to the Texan mean girl and her parents, but now the Chief Editor from the most renowned newspaper in the witch world was out for my blood. And all for what? Some sleazy news article that painted me in a worse light than the Scarlettes had already been working on.

Seriously, I was close to losing my mind.

Merlin, is it bad that I almost want her to just flirt with Ian again? I’d rather her continue to lure Ian to the dark side than deal with any more of this crap.

Talk about wishful thinking.

At Sabrina’s suggestion, and my fear of being put on display like a sideshow freak at a shady carnival, I had decided to just stay at the Varnes’ house and the Broomstein’s summer estate. For the last several days, I had just laid by the pool, soaked up the sun, read three books, and enjoyed hours of hot, passionate sex with my guys.

And as great as all of that may have sounded, I found myself going stir crazy. Sure, I was starting to sound like a broken record, even to myself, but this was supposed to be the best summer of my life. And so far, it was only shaping out to be the biggest disaster of all time. Of course, I knew that I had to keep myself out of the limelight for a while, but at this rate, I was starting to grow claustrophobic.

If I had to look at another set of four walls for one more evening, I was probably going to level a building on purpose.

Okay, maybe I wouldn’t reach those extremes, but I was close.

With a heavy sigh, I threw myself back onto the pillows and held my phone up to read the latest text message from Callie. Merlin, bless that girl. Because if it wasn’t for Callie, I probably would have accidentally snapped once or twice on the boys and gotten into more trouble than I already was.

Callie: Are you sure you’re doing okay? You seem even more down than usual today :( I don’t like this </3

Me: Yeah, I’m fine.
